About the AWS

 Mission/Vision

Mission/Vision

The Animal Welfare Society, located in West Kennebunk, Maine, is a private, non-profit humane society formed in the early 1960's by a group of caring individuals. The founders included the late Mrs. Elmina B. Sewall and the late Mr. Donald Shephard who served as the Society's first President of the Board of Directors. In 1967, the Society became incorporated and has now expanded to a shelter of over 13,000 square feet. Our service area for adoptions and other services extends throughout Southern Maine. We provide municipal shelter services to 18 communities representing a population of nearly 150,000 persons.

As our mission statement reads: "The Animal Welfare Society exists to provide humane shelter and care to animals temporarily in need of housing, and to further the cause of responsible animal adoption and ownership through education and public awareness. The society actively promotes kindness, the elimination of cruelty and neglect to all animals, and the lifelong commitment of people to their pets."

We accomplish these goals through the generosity of concerned citizens who contribute to our non-profit society through donations, pledges, membership and bequests. These funds go directly to the care of the animals and the many other programs we offer to the people and animals of our communities.

A shelter can only be as successful as its core staff, volunteers and the community that supports it. We are lucky to have a great community that fully endorses and supports our mission. Meet our staff.

The Animal Welfare Society is an exciting, demanding and ever-changing workplace. Many of our employees and volunteers have been here for years. If you want to work with animals where you will have the deepest feeling of satisfaction after a hard day's work. Apply Here.

The Volunteer Community here at the AWS is unlike any other volunteer opportunity. It is a rewarding and encouraging experience. The animals love the attention and time spent with them to make their stay here a happy one. Without the help of our volunteers, we would be unable to accomplish all we do with the animals and for the animals. For more information about how you can get involved, click here.
