Adoption Fees

Adopting from the Animal Welfare Society in Maine is a wonderful way to make a difference in the life of a homeless pet. The adoption fee covers care received at the shelter, including spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations and parasite control. We want to send your pet home as healthy as possible!

Your adoption packet includes a number of great benefits as well.

All adopted dogs are required to leave on a leash and collar. You can bring them from home if have them, or you can purchase them from our retail store.

Dogs/Puppies Adoption Fees Include:

  • Spay or Neuter Surgery
  • Rabies Vaccine (for canines over 12 weeks)
  • Distemper and Kennel Cough Vaccines
  • Internal and External Parasite Control (including a dose of Flea & Tick Preventative)
  • Heartworm Testing & Treatment (if needed)
  • Microchip (registered to you at the time of adoption)
  • Discount Coupon for Dog Obedience at AWS

Dog Adoption Fees (depending on size, age, and breed)

  • Puppies 8 weeks to 6 months – $385 – $485
  • Dogs 7 months to 11 months – $315 – $385
  • Dogs 1 year to 7 1/2 years – $285 – $315
  • Senior Dogs 8 years and older – $99 – $145

 Cats/Kittens Adoption Fees Include:

  • Spay or Neuter Surgery
  • Rabies Vaccine (for felines over 12 weeks)
  • 2 Distemper Vaccines
  • Feline Leukemia Testing
  • Internal and External Parasite Control (including a dose of Flea & Tick Preventative)
  • Microchip (registered to you at the time of adoption)
  • Collar & Tag

Cat Adoption Fees (depending on  age and level of socialization)

  • Kittens 8 weeks to 4 months – $215
  • Kittens 5 months to 7 months – $140
  • Juvenile Cats 8 months to 11 months – $100
  • Adult Cats 1 year to 7 1/2 years – $75
  • Senior Cats 8 years and older – $10
  • Semi-socialized Kittens & Cats – $35

Small Animal Adoption Fees Include

  • Flea & Tick Preventative (if needed)

Small Animal & Bird Adoption Fees:

  • Rats $5 – $7
  • Rabbits $20 – $50
  • Guinea Pigs $20 – $25
  • Parakeets $5 – $10
  • Doves $5 – $10
  • Others price varies by breed

We offer a Behavioral Helpline to assist you after the adoption.  Call (207) 985-3244 ext. 131, leave a message, and one of our knowledgeable staff members will call you back. We can provide counseling to pet owners facing problems such as scratching furniture, chewing, eliminating in the house or outside the litter box, pulling on the leash, etc. We can also provide guidance on how to best introduce your new pet to other pets in your household.
