Adoption Fees

Adopting from the Animal Welfare Society in Maine is a wonderful way to make a difference in the life of a pet in need. The adoption fee covers care received at AWS, including spay/neuter surgery, wellness exam, temperament review, vaccinations and parasite control. We want to send your pet home as healthy as possible!

Your adoption packet includes a number of great benefits as well.

All adopted dogs are required to leave on a leash and collar. You can bring them from home if have them, or you can purchase them from our retail store.

Dog/Puppy Adoption Fees Include:

  • Spay or Neuter Surgery
  • Wellness Exam at the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic
  • Rabies Vaccine (12 weeks and older)
  • Distemper and Kennel Cough Vaccines
  • Internal and External Parasite Control (including a dose of Flea & Tick Preventative)
  • Heartworm Testing (6 months and older) & Preventative (all ages)
  • Microchip (registered to you at the time of adoption)
  • Discount Coupon for AWS Canine Training Classes

Dog Adoption Fees
Dog adoption fees vary and typically range from $99-$585+ depending on size, age, and breed type

  • Puppies 8 weeks to 6 months: $385 – $585
  • Dogs 7 months to 11 months: $315 – $385
  • Dogs 1 year to 7 1/2 years: $285 – $315
  • Senior Dogs 8 years and older: $99 – $145

 Cat/Kitten Adoption Fees Include:

  • Spay or Neuter Surgery
  • Wellness Exam at the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic
  • Rabies Vaccine (for felines over 12 weeks)
  • Distemper Vaccine
  • Feline Leukemia Testing
  • Internal and External Parasite Control (including a dose of Flea & Tick Preventative)
  • Microchip
  • Collar & Tag

Cat Adoption Fees
Cat adoption vary and typically range from $10 – $250+ depending on  age, sociability and breed type

  • Kittens 8 weeks to 4 months: $215
  • Kittens 5 months to 7 months: $140
  • Juvenile Cats 8 months to 11 months: $100
  • Adult Cats 1 year to 7 1/2 years: $75
  • Senior Cats 8 years and older:$10
  • Semi-socialized Kittens & Cats: $35

Small Animal Adoption Fees Include

  • Flea & Tick Preventative (if needed)
  • Wellness Exam at the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic

Small animal  adoption fees vary particularly by species and are typically as follows:

  • Rats $10 each/$18 per pair
  • Mice $7 each/$10 per pair
  • Hamsters $12 – $25
  • Gerbils $15 – $20
  • Guinea Pigs $38 – $45
  • Chinchillas $150 each/$275 per pair
  • Ferrets $150
  • Sugar Gliders $150 – $300
  • Rabbits $40-$75

Bird Adoption Fees:
Bird adoption fees vary and are typically determined by age, size, temperament and species

  • Parakeets $10
  • Budgie/Canary $20
  • Cockatiel $100 – $125
  • Conure $250 – $300

Reptile Adoption Fees
Reptile adoption fees vary and are typically determined by age,  temperament and species

  • Bearded Dragon $60 – $80
  • Leopard Gecko $30 – $40
  • Corn Snake $70
  • Ball Python $60 – $120

Fees for other exotic animals and large birds vary by breed.

We offer a Behavioral Helpline to assist you after the adoption.  Call (207) 985-3244 ext. 131, leave a message, and one of our knowledgeable staff members will call you back. We can provide counseling to pet owners facing problems such as scratching furniture, chewing, eliminating in the house or outside the litter box, pulling on the leash, etc. We can also provide guidance on how to best introduce your new pet to other pets in your household.
