Adoption

Long Term Residents

How we help our Long-Term Residents!

The primary function of the Animal Welfare Society is to provide shelter and care for homeless animals, while trying to adopt them out into loving, permanent homes. In light of this role, we recognize that some animals will have longer stays at the shelter than others, and that some animals have very little chance of being adopted due to behavioral and/or medical conditions. In order to give due consideration to the animals who have had a longer stay here at the AWS, we have formed the Long Term Resident or LTR Program.

This program enables the staff here at the shelter to keep track of and give special consideration to the animals who have been here for an extended period of time. These activities are done in no particular order and are all performed in hopes of increasing the adoptability of the animals and to reduce the chance of stress related behavioral problems. Some activities will be done for all of the residents, while others are on a case-by-case basis. The last resort will be euthanasia in the event that an animal cannot be adopted out due to already present circumstances, or issues that arise due to the long-term stay at the shelter, such as medical or behavioral issues.

As outlined below, The LTR Program will serve the needs of the animals to have more attention, a change of scenery and special activities. We hope that many of these activities will make the animal’s stay here more enjoyable, as well as help in reaching the end goal of a loving adopting family.

"Raja"

I am one of the l*ast Buxton dogs looking for a home.  They call me Raja.  A regal name for a dog from very humble beginnings.  Raja loosely translated means monarch or royal.  I do not need a kingdom, or even an estate to call home.  A simple home with a loving family is all this middle aged American Bulldog needs.  My friends at the shelter have kept me busy while I wait for my family to adopt me.  I have gone to mobile adoption events, a fashion show and one of my favorite volunteers is taking me to obedience classes here at the shelter.  I graduate soon!  My new family will need to be patient with me.  Older, gentle kids who can understand that I have had a rough childhood myself would be perfect in my new home.  I have little experience living in a home environment, so please be patient as I experience things like tv’s, furnace noise and even refrigerator noises.  Because I have lived in a kennel environment for so long I will need a house training refresher.  I know the basics, you and I will need to fine tune my scheduling.  I am on the shy side, so it may take me a while to warm up to everyone, but it is worth the wait, I bond deeply with people close to me.  I like to ride, just be careful for something else I like to do . . . drool.  When I go out I have my personal towel.  I do this when I am excited and happy.   When you visit the shelter stop and see me.  No bow or curtsey necessary.

Raja has been at AWS since 2/04/08.

"Clover"

Here is Clover! She is a 6-year-old spayed female and has a beautiful, medium length, torti colored coat. She may require a bit of brushing just to keep it nice and mat free. She also must stay on a dry food called ZD to keep her allergies under control. Clover came to us as a stray and is a great kitty who is not only beautiful, but sweet. Clover is housed in our front lobby and she would love for you to come and see her. Your home just may become that forever home that she dreams of.

Clover has been at AWS since 6/20/07.

"Granite"

Granite is a 4-year-old mixed breed male rabbit. He is here at the shelter because his previous family lost interest in him. Also because of that fact he has not been socialized like he should have been so he might not be the best home for a family with small children that is looking for a bunny to cuddle. But if given the proper amount of attention, and with a little patience, he should blossom in a new home that is understanding. Stop by soon and meet Granite.

Granite has been at AWS since 4/12/07.
