Jumping for Joy
This heartwarming new program brings together high school students on the autism spectrum with dogs for a six-week canine training program.
Each week, students are paired one-on-one with a dog. The dogs are AWS alums and are proven to have extensive experience with children. Many are certified therapy dogs. Along with their educators and AWS volunteers, students collaborate to take the dogs through an agility course. Each week progresses on the last week, with a celebratory graduation ceremony on week six.
Students interact socially, grow communication skills, and learn to problem solve. It builds confidence and self-esteem. And most importantly, they have fun with the dogs!
There is no cost to the students to participate in this program, but school districts must provide transportation. Special education teachers refer students and should accompany them to the weekly sessions (which are held during the school day). If you are a teacher and would like to learn more about how your school can partner with AWS, please contact Brie Roche, Humane Educator at (207) 985-3244 ext. 109.
