What Is The Sadie Fund?
The Animal Welfare Society spends approximately $90,000 annually on medical care
for aged, injured, and sick homeless animals. Of the thousands of animals that
arrive at AWS each year, difficult decisions must be made based on the long-term
quality of life and costs of medical care that may include daily medications,
Lyme disease and heartworm treatments, spay/neuter surgery, or even life-saving
procedures like joint replacement or amputation.
Surrendered by her owner who could not afford to properly care for her health
problems, Sadie arrived at AWS with a severe skin allergy, Lyme disease, and
kidney failure. In spite of her many medical issues, it was obvious to our staff
that this little 8-year-old Shih Tzu had a huge heart, tons of charisma, and a
keen zest for life. She quickly charmed the entire AWS staff. After extensive
testing, treatment, and doctor visits, Sadie continues to recover and is happy
in a new home . . . But this happy ending didn't come without a considerable cost.
A donation to the Sadie Fund will directly help to pay for medical care to save
more special homeless animals like Sadie.
While Sadie was the inspiration for AWS to rename this special fund, she is just
one of many heartwarming success stories of dogs and cats who arrived at the
shelter with medical maladies and are now healthy and happy in new homes. For
example:
-
Mittens (Gray/White Cat – headshot) - A sweetie at heart, Mittens was
surrendered to the shelter after running into a glass door and shattering
her leg while playing with her brother. Her family could not afford the
medical costs, but wanted what was best for her, so she came to us. After
an extensive surgery and several months in foster care with much needed
physical therapy, she was swept up by her new forever family.
-
Flower –(Black dog white chest) – Originally found as a stray, Flower was a
medical mystery to not only the shelter staff, but to the veterinarians.
With medical treatments ranging from surgery to extensive blood analysis,
Flower’s stay at AWS was quite long. Her spirits never dampened, however,
and she tore at the heart-strings of anyone who met her. When she was
finally made available for adoption, she found her place with a loving
family who didn’t mind that she came with a little baggage. She is a
special girl with a heart of gold and we’re sure she is filling her forever
home with lots of love.
-
Gretchen – Returned after a short stay with her first adoptive family,
Gretchen tested positive for both heartworm and Lyme disease. After a few
months of treatment and lots of TLC from the staff and volunteers, she
finally found her forever home and her new mom couldn’t be happier. Making
a full recovery, Gretchen is a proud graduate of AWS obedience class and is
living a very much-deserved spoiled life with her new family!
