Animal Care Intensive
Animal Care Intensive (ACI) is a week-long series of STEM-focused workshops for high school students deeply interested in working in an animal care field. Students will gain hands-on experience in the vast field of veterinary sciences by working with the following professionals and experts:
- Small and Companion Animal Veterinarians
- Animal Care and Veterinary Technicians
- Engineers and Veterinary Lab Technicians
- Wildlife and Exotic Animal Veterinarians
- Large Animal and Equine Veterinarians
Students will spend a day at the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic and a day in the AWS Adoption Center. The week also will include day-long field trips to IDEXX Laboratories in Westbrook, Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick and the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals in Windham.
ACI takes place August 20-24 from 9 am – 4 pm at the Animal Welfare Society. Tuition for the week is $400.
High-school students with an interest in veterinary sciences or a strong desire to pursue a career in animal care are encouraged to apply by June 30th. To apply, students must submit a 1-2 page essay along with their application. For more information or to request the application, please contact Humane Educator Brie Robes at (207) 985-3244 ext. 109 or via email.
Each summer, AWS hosts week-long animal adventures for children ages 7 to 13. Daily activities include animal time, dog obedience, agility and tricks training, games, crafts, fun animal challenges and field trips – all while in an environment that encourages animal advocacy and education. Campers get cool t-shirts to wear on outings and lots of other goodies that make camp fantastic, including daily snacks. Please pack a lunch.
Sessions run Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm, and tuition is $300 per session. We have a limited number of camp scholarships available for eligible students. If interested, please ask your child’s guidance counselor or principal to contact Brie Robes. Camp scholarship application is due May 15th.
