Job Opening: Staff Veterinarian

REPORTS TO: Operations Manager

POSITION SUMMARY: The Animal Welfare Society Community Veterinary Clinic seeks a full-time veterinarian to support our surgery, shelter, and community medicine programs. This person will work alongside two other full-time staff veterinarians between our main campus and satellite clinic locations. Shelter activities center around physical exams and developing treatment plans for shelter pets. Community medicine activities occur primarily through our main campus clinic, and there is opportunity for involvement in larger community outreach programs. We offer a four-day work week and eligibility for state and federal loan repayment programs. 

WORK LOCATION: This position will be at both our main campus in Kennebunk and our new satellite clinic in Biddeford.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfill AWS’ mission
• Practice veterinary medicine from a traditional general practice perspective. Flexibility to practice in accordance with AWS policies and budget guidelines
• Responsible for enforcing and maintaining medical and surgical protocols and ensures AWS compliance with all applicable state and federal requirements
• Assist in planning and implementing preventative/wellness programs for clients and patients
• Provide emergency and non-emergency medical and surgical treatment for patients of the AWS clinic and shelter
• Perform dental, orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures for AWS clinic patients and shelter residents as needed
• Perform spay/neuter surgeries on shelter and public animals, including pregnant animals
• Provide diagnostics, treatment and follow-up care to client owned patients 
• Seek the scheduling of outside veterinary resources for procedures not available at AWS
• Provide a health certificate for any animal crossing state lines
• Willingness to be on call with a rotating schedule between all staff veterinarians for shelter pets only (available by phone for advice, not required to report in person)
• Perform or supervise humane euthanasia as required
• Support staff and clinic volunteers to ensure consistent high quality care
• Mentor and oversee Veterinary Technicians on animal examination techniques, medical protocols, surgical prep, anesthesia monitoring and recovery, including Veterinary Technician students as necessary
• Ensure medical records are complete and accurate in a timely manner
• Communicate with owners effectively and in a timely manner
• Responsible for meeting DEA requirements and maintaining current licensure
• Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with AWS Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and AWS policies, procedures and programs
• Support programs and activities of AWS as requested

EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES DESIRED:     

• Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine or equivalent
• Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Maine in good standing and must complete all professional requirements to maintain licensure
• Enthusiasm for general practice and general surgery
• Fear Free certification – if not already certified, AWS will provide training
• Ability to conduct high-volume, high-quality surgical sterilizations in a fast-paced environment
• Possess or have the ability to obtain a DEA license
• Basic computer literacy required. Familiarity with primary clinic software, Digitail, and shelter management software, Shelterluv, is helpful but not required
• New graduates will be considered

• Demonstrate initiative and the capacity to think creatively

SALARY: $115,000 – $130,000
