The Animal Welfare Society is fortunate to have volunteers who take adoptable dogs through the obedience classes.  They also spend quality time, playing with, walking, and running the dogs. Here’s what some volunteers had to say about Alexis:

“If we had a category of “Most Improved Shelter Dog of the Month”, Alexis would certainly win it hands down…correction…paws down.  I feel comfortable saying that because the changes in her over the past few weeks have been amazing. When I first met Alexis, taking her for a walk or just sitting with her for some quiet time was virtually impossible.  She was so wound up that she was almost impossible to control or to get her to focus on anything.  She may never have been taught leash etiquette because all she did was tie you in knots by going back and forth, or in circles around you.  Fortunately this did not stop the staff and volunteers from patiently working with her and the results are astonishing.

To me, Alexis is now an entirely new dog.  While in her kennel, she calmly looks at you with an expectant expression that hopes you are there to see her and spend time with her.  When she sees the leash, she still goes in circles around you, but out of pure joy at what is about to happen.  Although she still pulls a little during a walk, it is primarily to get to the next tree so that she can sniff it.  That is the only time her head is down because most of the time, she holds it high and erect and walks proudly while she takes in everything around her.  She is a curious girl who wants to meet and greet everyone.  The biggest change is that she now also enjoys just sitting quietly next to you on a bench to watch the world go by.  And yes, she actually gave me a kiss yesterday, and once again; I am in love with a girl named Alexis.

If you know Alexis or meet her for the first time, I am sure that you will agree that she is a proud girl who needs your attention, patience and love.  She is a young girl who is eager to learn and thrives on companionship.  Take a look at that face; get to know her and the rest is up to you.  There is always room for even more improvement; just think of the fun you can have.” Malte
