The Animal Welfare Society is fortunate to have volunteers who take adoptable dogs through the obedience classes.  They also spend quality time, playing with, walking, and running the dogs. Here’s what some volunteers had to say about Jewel:

“Walked beautifully! Sweet girl and eager to please.” Roberta

“I recently discovered a hidden Jewel in the form of a dog appropriately called, Jewel (no pun intended).  She is one of those dogs that just plain enjoys being with people.  Whenever we go for walks, she wants to briefly say Hi to everyone and then she sits quietly by your side until any conversation is over and it is time to move on.  The same happens when you sit on a bench.  Jewel sniffs the surroundings just to make sure there are no surprises and then she sits with you and just watches the world go by.  As you walk, she periodically turns her head to make sure you are still there and to say, “thank you”.

On Saturday I took Jewel to the AWS Craft Fair on the Green in Kennebunkport and she really lived up to her name.  I keep a dog crate in my car for everyone’s safety.  When I opened the car door, Jewel immediately jumped into the crate without any encouragement and laid down.  At the Craft Fair, she walked at my side and politely greeted anyone who noticed her including other dogs.  Comments such as, “what a calm dog,”  “she is so sweet” abound.  On one occasion she was ambushed and surprised from behind by two hyper ankle biters.  Instead of being upset or growl she just turned around, sniffed both dogs and quietly went on her way.

Since it was lunchtime, I decided to take Jewel home with me prior to going back to the shelter.  She had to check out the entire house, but when she was satisfied, she laid down on the kitchen floor while my wife was making lunch for both of us.  As I ate, she came over and lay at my feet to keep me company.  By now I think you probably get my drift; I love this Jewel of a dog and enjoy being in her company.  She would make a great addition to any home and makes you feel good because she wants to be with you, and share her unconditional love for people.  She is indeed a hidden Jewel and I want to share this treasure with anyone who will listen.” Malte
