DESCRIPTION:Open to puppies who are 8-19 weeks old. \n\n\n\nFoster positive associations with other dogs while having fun. \n\n\n\nWhat does ‘Pop-Up’ mean? It means these play sessions aren’t scheduled regularly but rather spontaneously as time is available. Activities include play time with enrichment toys\, puppy obstacle courses\, and supervised free play with other puppies to explore and interact under the watchful eyes of experienced trainers. Owners will also gain valuable insight to understanding their puppy’s body language and social cues. \n\n\n\nFree playtime will depend on the dynamic of the puppies in each session and is not guaranteed. It is at the trainer’s discretion. Puppies need to have had their first round of shots and a negative fecal sample in order to start the class.

SUMMARY:Pet Dogs Fighting Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:The spotted lanternfly (SLF)\, an invasive species spreading rapidly across 17 states\, is projected to reach Maine by 2026. Last year\, a study led by Texas Tech and Virginia Tech set out to answer a crucial question: could pet dogs be trained to detect and help control the spread of this highly destructive pest? \n\n\n\nAWS’s own trainer\, Melissa McCue-McGrath\, along with six dogs from her scent work classes\, were selected to represent Maine in this effort. These teams pivoted from recreational scent work training to the task of finding SLF egg masses—a crucial step in combating this ecological threat.  \n\n\n\nJoin us to hear how these dogs and their handlers persevered in learning to recognize SLF scent detection amid the challenges of a harsh Maine winter. This presentation will take you through their inspiring journey to support a healthier ecosystem and offer a glimpse into how pet dogs can make a real difference! \n\n\n\nYou will also have a chance to meet one of the canine heroes firsthand! One of the six dogs from the study will be present at the event to lead a demonstration. \n\n\n\nAttendance automatically qualifies you for our raffle prize: a free dog training class! \n\n\n\nPlease leave your pet dogs at home. This is a people-only event.
