Please put yourself in Angela’s shoes. Angela* is a local pet owner who received notice that her landlord has sold her apartment building, a place she has called home for nearly 10 years. The building is to be completely renovated and Angela has to move out. She – along with her cat Hazel and her dog Trixie – must find a new place to live. The eviction notice Angela receives gives her 30 days to vacate her home, so she gets right to work looking up apartment listings. What she sees is very disheartening – “no pets”, “no animals allowed”, “This apartment complex is pet free.” The few places that are pet-friendly have no available rentals and months-long waiting lists. Angela stays hopeful. Each evening, when she gets home from work, she diligently looks for a new place.
Sadly, her thirty-day deadline is nearly upon her and still, she hasn’t found a place that she, Hazel and Trixie can call home. Panic rising in her mind, Angela realizes she must make an agonizing choice – either live outside unhoused with her pets or give up her pets to rent an apartment. As her heart breaks, Angela makes the phone call to start the process o surrendering them to AWS for adoption. Can you imagine what is going through Angela’s mind? Can you imagine having to give up your pets?
When Angela calls AWS, she finds out there is another option – AWS’ Stay@Home program. She learns that the program offers services and resources, including temporary pet boarding, to help people just like her.
