Build Your Own Cat Shelters

As winter creeps in and the days become colder, we begin to think of our feral cat friends and how to best aid them through the winter months. Feral cat shelters can provide a safe and warm place for a single cat or colony to take refuge from the cold as well as hide from predators or bad weather.

They can be as simple as a straw-lined, plastic container or as complex as a multi-roomed, wooden structure. Either way, keeping these cats in mind during our harsh, Maine winters could help save their lives!
If you’d like to build a feral cat shelter of your own, we have detailed plans, diagrams, step-by-step instructions, and a helpful list of materials to get your started. Make it a weekend project or a fun activity to do as a family. Kindness is always in season!
Special thanks to Biddeford Animal Control Officer Garth Russell for these plans!
