Shelter Helpers
In conjunction with local recreation departments and after-school care programs, students spend an hour a week after school, for four weeks, at AWS. Students spend time with the animals, learn about animal behavior and body language, have a special tour of the adoption center, and do hands-on activities and crafts. Students have the opportunity to see how much goes into caring for companion animals and learn valuable lessons in compassion, kindness and empathy.
For more information on how your recreation department or after-school care program can get involved, please contact Amanda Zimmerman, AWS’ Youth Program Coordinator, at (207) 985-3244 ext. 109.
Check out our At-Home Project Guide for ways to engage your after-school groups with volunteer projects to help the pets at AWS!
AWS Youth Programs follow the RSU21 (Kennebunk) school calendar. If there is a snow day or if the district shifts to remote learning, AWS programs will not take place in-person.
