About the Program

If your female dog or cat is expecting or just had babies, we can help through our Mother Spay Program.

Once the litter is 8-10 weeks old, we will spay the mother at no cost to you and find homes for all the little ones if you admit them to AWS’ Adoption Program.

Mom will stay with you, her spay surgery taken care of.

Benefits of Mother Spay Program

By spaying Mom, you ensure no more unwanted litters and you improve Mom’s health and quality of life.
By turning over (surrendering) the kittens or puppies to AWS for adoption, you remove the stress of trying to find home for the little ones yourself. Like all pets in AWS’ Adoption Program, they will be spayed/neutered, receive veterinary care, vaccinations and preventatives. Most importantly, they will be given top-notch care from the moment they are admitted to AWS to the moment they go home with their new people.

Important Information*
– The mother’s spay surgery fee is waived ONLY if you turn over (surrender) the kittens/puppies to AWS for adoption.
– AWS does not want financial resources to be a barrier between people and what’s needed for their pets. We do not charge a fee for animal admissions, but we do rely on donations large and small to provide care for pets in the shelter.
– Admission into an animal shelter may not be the best or only solution for you and your pet. After your application has been submitted, AWS staff will call you to discuss options and next steps.

National Teacher Appreciation Day means observing, celebrating and, of course, appreciating the many teachers and educators who make a difference in the lives of children and their families. Here at AWS, we have Youth Programs Coordinator, Miss Amanda!

Whether it`s carting a whole van of books and puppets to a Furry Tales event, setting up comfortable rooms with pets for children to read to during Rescue Readers, sparking imagination and adventure during Summer Camp, or educating students on the health, wellbeing, and empathy of animals, Miss Amanda gives her best every day! 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰!
Volunteer to be a morning dog kennel cleaner! Volunteers keep AWS’ dog areas clean and comfortable. Daily tasks include scrubbing and sanitizing dog kennels and providing fresh bedding and dog toys.

Specific Qualifications and Skills:
· Must be comfortable working with dogs of all sizes
· Must be able to lift, bend, and be on your feet for prolonged periods of time.
· Special training is provided before your first shift so that proper sanitation protocols are followed.

Schedule: Volunteer shift begins at 8:30am and lasts until the kennel cleaning is done - approx. 2 hrs. Weekly commitment needed.
Open shifts: Mondays (2 volunteers needed), Tuesdays (2 volunteers needed), Friday (2 volunteers needed).

Have you ever wanted to volunteer with animals? If so, you`ve come to the right place! The staff and pets at Animal Welfare Society would love your daily help cleaning and sanitizing our animal spaces. We have a Happy Homes story for you featuring a small, scruffy dog named Troy, now named Loon! You may remember Loon from our last group of transport dogs who traveled all the way to Maine looking for their happy homes. Now that Loon has found his, he is absolutely loving being part of a New England family! With mountains to hike, trails to explore, and all the new sights and sounds, Loon`s family couldn`t wait to share all his amazing pictures with us. And trust us, these photos are worth a thousand words!

Join us TODAY to march behind the AWS van for Kennebunk`s annual May Day Parade! There will be volunteers, adopters, and lots of friendly canines! For children and their families, you can be a part of the Youth Parade Brigade by joining our Youth Programs Coordinator, Miss Amanda, and her adorable doodle puppy, Bowie! Participating children get a free sticker and backpack (while supplies last), and are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal or their family dog!

If you wish to march with us, no need to register in advance! Simply come on down to Kennebunk on Water Street and look for our colorful van. Line-up starts at 12:30pm and the parade kicks off at 1:30pm. See you there!
