Cats & Kittens
Thank you for choosing Animal Welfare Society as a place to adopt a pet!
We regularly have adults cats of all ages and often have kittens in our Adoption Center. Remember that kittens tend to be adopted very quickly, so if you do not see any, please check back again soon.
We look forward to helping to match you with your new best friend and supporting you throughout the adoption process. AWS regularly cares for and houses dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and small animals. The Adoption Center is open Tuesday – Sunday from 10am – 12:30pm and 1:30pm – 4pm, with the last adoption meet at 3:30pm. (Closed Mondays for staff training and extra animal enrichment). For most pets, adopters can drop-in during our open hours, without needing to schedule an appointment or fill out any paperwork in advance. For pets in foster care (as indicated on their profile), please call to schedule an appointment to meet the pet at AWS.
All adoptions are on a first come, first served basis. These adoption pages are REAL TIME, so as soon as a cat or kitten adoption takes place, the pet “disappears” from the website.
To adopt, please stop by the Adoption Center during our open hours: Tuesday – Sunday from 10am – 12:30pm and 1:30pm – 4pm, with the last adoption meet or scheduled appointment at 3:30pm. If the pet is listed as being in foster care, please call first. To learn more about what to expect when adopting from AWS and to view our FAQs, please visit our adoption process page.

Tabby now Tappan Zee
Yes, she is named after the bridge over the Hudson River. Apparently she originally came from upstate New York and spend a fair bit of time in the animal shelter system. It took about a year, a year and a half, for her to warm up to us. Even though she tries to hide it, she loves us. She’s a pretty great cat (but don’t tell her I said that).

Dopey now Oscar
Hi, after we had to put our cats (siblings) to sleep for different health reasons six weeks apart which was completely devastating and finding we had a hole in our hearts, we decided to adopt. Dopey was in the Library in Kennebunk. He was shy and skittish. However, we felt we might be able to give him what he needed: a loving home. After a few rough days (he hid most of the time and wasn’t eating!). He is now living the good life. People food (tuna, sardines, salmon) have put weight on him and he has gained 5 pounds.…

Zoidberg now Stubby
We adopted Zoidberg, now Stubby, about a month and a half ago and he is a very happy, excited kitten!! We already have fallen in love with him, and he brings us joy and laughter throughout the day!! Thank you AWS for a great adoption experience, and I want to leave a dozen pictures for you all to see, but I have chosen one I took just yesterday, because he is just so darn CUTE!!!

Narissa

So when I received the text: “Unrelated, we have a cat at work named Narissa”, my interest peaked in ways it never had before, and my initial plan to adopt a dog went out the window when I saw her picture. The first time I met her, I sobbed. She was an instant lovebug, hesitant, but happy. And when I saw that her birthday was the same day as my recently…
