Volunteer with the Animal Welfare Society

Volunteers change lives. Our volunteers are caring, committed, and all here for the same reason — because they love animals. Without their extra hands, we would be unable to accomplish all we do for pets in need. In 2017, our volunteers amassed more than 30,000 hours of service to AWS and our animals! We are so appreciative of the time, energy and knowledge that our volunteers share with our staff and pets.

Volunteer at AWS

Every day of the week, volunteers keep our adoption center, clinic and programs running smoothly. Volunteers spend time with our animals and keep them happy and entertained. From walking dogs to answering phones, volunteers are an integral part of the operations of AWS’ facility in West Kennebunk. See the ways you can make a difference as an AWS volunteer!

Attend Events

Ambassadors represent AWS’ mission at events such as family fun days, local festivals, craft fairs, parades and adoption events. Find out how you can join the fun!

Assist in the Clinic

Volunteer veterinary assistants help in the AWS Community Veterinary Clinic cleaning, sterilizing surgical equipment and helping animals recover from anesthesia. Have a background in medicine? Interested in veterinary sciences? This is a great opportunity to use your skills to help the animals.

Care for an Animal in your Home

Providing foster care to pets that are not ready for adoption is a great way to make a difference. AWS provides everything you need to care for foster pets in your home, including beds, toys, food, litter and medical care.  All you need to provide a safe, comfortable space and lots of LOVE! Become a foster family today!

Bring in a Youth Volunteer Group

Open to groups of students in grades 6-12, our youth volunteer program makes it possible for youth groups, scout troops or school clubs to volunteer and learn at AWS. The program, led by our Humane Educator, offers one-time or recurring volunteer projects.  Get started today!

Student Community Service Volunteers

AWS is happy to host students looking for community service hours. Students may apply for the next available orientation session to become an AWS volunteer or can complete their volunteer hours through our At-Home Projects.
