Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals
If you are a parent to a pet that is anything other than a dog, cat, or farm animal, then you have an exotic pet! These include rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, reptiles, and even birds. As responsible pet parents, we know it can be hard to find a vet who suites their specific needs. Luckily, here in our community, there is a new veterinary practice that has just opened! Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals is run by a knowledgable and kind vet who specializes in exotic mammals. We cannot recommend him enough and suggest that you take your smalls to Dr. Ford!
Who is Dr. Ford?
Matthew Ford, DVM, graduated from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and has been practicing in Maine for 17 years. Dr. Ford spent ten years as the owner and medical director of Scarborough Animal Hospital, a large four-doctor companion animal practice. Now in 2024, Dr. Ford is excited to build on his work by opening a hospital exclusively for small companion mammals! His love for exotic pets began in college when he got his first rabbit. Now, he’s lovingly referred to as an “intense bunny guy” by those who know him. Dr. Ford is driven by caring for exotic pets, and is delighted to have the opportunity to help yours!
Dr. Ford and AWS
Back when his hospital first opened, Dr. Ford was kind enough to teach a session of our Animal Care Intensive (ACI). As part of ACI, children who are seriously interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine visited many laboratories and veterinary practices. Needless to say, Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals was on our list! Students got a first hand look at caring for exotic mammals and what it’s like to work as a vet. Dr. Ford provided lessons, allowed students a look around the hospital, and answered any questions. Plus, he was happy to help the children and pets of his community!
Now that Animal Care Intensive is over, Dr. Ford continues to help AWS! We’ve partnered with his practice to help parents of exotic pets get veterinary care more easily. Every small, exotic mammal adopted from AWS (such as guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, etc.) will receive a voucher for a FREE wellness exam with Dr. Ford. Not only will parents feel more at ease adopting, but Dr. Ford will help better care for exotic pets. It’s a win-win!
Adoptable Smalls
Directly from his website, Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals is Maine’s first general practice for exotic companion mammals. We hope this will help parents of exotic mammals feel more comfortable knowing there are professionals nearby to care for their pets. Check out our current adoptable littles and see if anyone catches your eye! Not only will you have a new friend, but you’ll receive a free vet visit if you choose to adopt. We’re happy to match you to the right pet, and Dr. Ford is happy to help keep them healthy!
