Gracie
I had just moved into a new home in Wells. It was getting deep into the Fall and felt like it was time to fill the home with another heartbeat/pulse. I had a senior female dog for 16+ years that I had adopted (she lived to be 18+) and loved the temperament of the older females. In November 2022, I took a peek at AWS website and saw that Gracie was available and looking for her retirement home. I said that is likely the most perfect fit. I met her and she came right up to me, so we bonded right away. …

Archie
The training with Melissa was so incredibly helpful and informative for me. She was able to identify, that in addition to hearing loss, he is also experiencing a reduction in peripheral vision – which appears to be causing additional stress for him. She was able to demonstrate several techniques and protocols for working/training with Archie as well as guidelines for not putting him in situations where he gets startled and could lead to a fearful snap. Plus the document she sent outlining the summary of her observations, training techniques, tools and tips is so helpful and will allow me to…

Oliver (Ollie)
My cat Oliver, aka Ollie, (adopted from AWS during COVID) had an appointment at your clinic yesterday. On the way there he was crying at the top of his lungs but once put in the exam room with the soft light and music playing he was as quiet as could be. Thank you for always making these animals feel so comfortable ❤️

Dopey now Oscar
Hi, after we had to put our cats (siblings) to sleep for different health reasons six weeks apart which was completely devastating and finding we had a hole in our hearts, we decided to adopt. Dopey was in the Library in Kennebunk. He was shy and skittish. However, we felt we might be able to give him what he needed: a loving home. After a few rough days (he hid most of the time and wasn’t eating!). He is now living the good life. People food (tuna, sardines, salmon) have put weight on him and he has gained 5 pounds.…

Zoidberg now Stubby
We adopted Zoidberg, now Stubby, about a month and a half ago and he is a very happy, excited kitten!! We already have fallen in love with him, and he brings us joy and laughter throughout the day!! Thank you AWS for a great adoption experience, and I want to leave a dozen pictures for you all to see, but I have chosen one I took just yesterday, because he is just so darn CUTE!!!

Narissa
I have always had a unique name— one that was never on keychains or in story books as a child, which I’ve slowly come to terms with during my time. So when I received the text: “Unrelated, we have a cat at work named Narissa”, my interest peaked in ways it never had before, and my initial plan to adopt a dog went out the window when I saw her picture. The first time I met her, I sobbed. She was an instant lovebug, hesitant, but happy. And when I saw that her birthday was the same day as my recently…

Angus now Maverick
We got Angus, now Maverick from AWS! When we got him he was a wild, anxious 10 month old. We quickly adapted to his energy levels and implemented some one-on-one training to reduce his anxiety. He now thrives, trail runs with me, has some pup best friends, and rules the house! I couldn’t imagine not finding him that day. ❤️

Toes
We adopted Toes two months ago. She was very shy and hesitant for a while, but we respected her boundaries and gave her space. Over the past few weeks, she has blossomed into a sweet snuggle bug. She had a heart murmur, but upon our most recent vet evaluation it was not detected. It was likely due to stress. She has found her peaceful forever home and is loving life. Thank you!

Butterfly
When I first entered the shelter to adopt a cockatiel I could hear her squacking really loud and constant! Wondering if this was a wise decision, I brought her into the house, put her on her cage (free bird) complete silence!!!She greets me upon coming home, and absolutely LOVES my 16 year old chihuahua!!! She has got such personality and is quite comical. Best decision ever!!!

Six now Mazzy Star
My husband and I are true animal lovers and have always talked about getting a dog when our living arrangements allowed. As soon as we moved from an apartment to a rented home that allowed and welcomed dogs, we knew that it was the perfect time to welcome another fur baby into our lives. After a lot of research, vetting and wandering the internet, a cute 72-pound pitbull-boxer mix named “Six” immediately caught our eye on the AWS website. After looking at her for over a week (and constantly refreshing the web page to make sure she was still available)…

Fred, Emile and Remi
I got the three boys because they are bonded together and I didn’t want to separate them. So I took them all home. They are doing so good and they are very sweet one fell asleep while I was holding him. I couldn’t be happier with them and I let them free range in the apartment. Only put them in the cage when I’m sleeping and going to work.

Saffron
Saffron is a five-year old mackerel tabby American shorthair. We found her cute face with a prominent furry M above her nose very charming. She was listed as a “barn cat,” so we assumed that she was likely an excellent mouser. My wife has a mouse phobia, and unfortunately we live next to a wood of perhaps a dozen acres with many kinds of birds and animals–including deer and foxes, woodchucks and mice. We see mice in our house only several months or so, and we look for droppings, so we know we don’t have a big problem. However, in…

Mortica now Merrill
We are obssesed with this spicy girl! She is so loving mixed with a big personality. First few hours with her and she was cuddling with me while I napped.

Cooper
Cooper is the best dog we could have imagined! He is ready for any adventure (he’s hiked a mountain in Vermont!). But is also content laying next to us on the couch on a rainy day. Cooper is gentle with anyone he meets (he recently met a flock of chickens) and is surprisingly the quietest hound you’d ever meet – perfect for apartment living. Thank you to the AWS team for introducing us to our adventure buddy! ♥️

Dozer
We adopted Dozer in February of 2026. We were told he would be shy and timid until he got used to us. But, the second he got home he immediately attached himself to us. Dozer has incredible manners and has improved moral for everyone so much! But the biggest thing is, I have some medical issues that Dozer is able to detect. This put us into the concept of scent training, and he is now a couple months into service dog training and doing fantastically (he has a fb page)! He is lovingly called Doki sometimes but his name Dozer…

Pebbles
We adopted Pebbles a couple of weeks ago. She was classified as a barn cat. The first week and a half were rocky with her as she transitioned. She would corner us, hiss, and swat. But I wasn’t giving up. Pebbles has her space and goes in and out as she pleases. And then one day… she did a full 180. She is happy, Not scared, and turned into sweet and a bit sassy but nothing like she was in the beginning. She fits in well with our family. She’s a beautiful cat, and I’m very glad she knows she’s…

Jill
We brought Jill home in January 2025. She was already 14.5 years old and we genuinely weren’t sure how much time we’d have with her. But we felt that she was very sweet and deserved a comfy home! Even if it might only be for a few months. We’re thrilled to report that our initial estimation was wildly incorrect! She’s been a member of our family for 1.5 years now, is having the time of her life, and is quickly approaching her 16th birthday! We’re so proud of how far she’s come since that first night in our home. Jill…

Scarlet Moon & Jolly Rancher now Moonshine & Lovebug
It’s been six months since Moonshine (formerly Scarlet Moon) and Lovebug (formerly Jolly Rancher) joined our family. It’s hard to imagine the house without them. We quickly realized they aren’t just two cats; they are two halves of one wonderful team. Moonshine, our gray tuxedo, started out as a bit of a mystery. She was a quiet spirit watching from the shadows, but she’s proven that the best things come to those who wait. Today, she’s traded her shyness for flops at our feet to get her favorite neck rubs and proactively hopping up to say hello. She’s still a…

Chicken and Birch now Tilly and Shebo
I rescued Tilly in 2022 she was a beagle that came from the lab testing. She is my soul dog. She loves cuddling, long walks with plenty of sniffing, she is the sweetest dog that wouldn’t hurt a soul. Shebo we rescued one year ago. He’s is the most loving dog. He is so funny and loves running around the dog park and playing and bringing every single toy outside to the backyard! He’s a funny one!
