Adoption Stories

  • Gracie

    Gracie

I had just moved into a new home in Wells. It was getting deep into the Fall and felt like it was time to fill the home with another heartbeat/pulse.  I had a senior female dog for 16+ years that I had adopted (she lived to be 18+) and loved the temperament of the older females. In November 2022, I took a peek at AWS website and saw that Gracie was available and looking for her retirement home. I said that is likely the most perfect fit. I met her and she came right up to me, so we bonded right away. …

Training Testimonials

  • Archie

    Archie

The training with Melissa was so incredibly helpful and informative for me. She was able to identify, that in addition to hearing loss, he is also experiencing a reduction in peripheral vision – which appears to be causing additional stress for him. She was able to demonstrate several techniques and protocols for working/training with Archie as well as guidelines for not putting him in situations where he gets startled and could lead to a fearful snap. Plus the document she sent outlining the summary of her observations, training techniques, tools and tips is so helpful and will allow me to…

    Oliver (Ollie)

My cat Oliver, aka Ollie, (adopted from AWS during COVID) had an appointment at your clinic yesterday. On the way there he was crying at the top of his lungs but once put in the exam room with the soft light and music playing he was as quiet as could be. Thank you for always making these animals feel so comfortable ❤️

  • Chester now Petey

    Chester now Petey

I met my best buddy seven years ago. Petey (“Chester” at the time) was the last dog at AWS while a renovation was going on, but he was one I instantly wanted to adopt. A three-legged dog who never let that fact slow him down, my mom often called him PDQ: “Pretty Darn Quick for a three-legged dog”. He wasn’t just a speed demon, though. We went for many walks over the years (especially during the pandemic when nothing was open and all we had WERE walks), but he was always content to sit with me, my wife, and our…

    Anna

Anna meowed most of ride home. It was almost an hour. I adopted her July 21, 2026. I was afraid she would hide and have a long adjustment. NO, she started to explore the house right after coming out of the kitty carrier. She is very affectionate and is a love bug. She watches the birds and chipmunks from the windows. Two days here and it’s like she has lived here her whole life. Very good move on my part.

  • Holly

    Holly

We adopted Holly when she was 12-1/2. She had been in the shelter for only a week. She had been one of eight dogs, was deaf from lifelong untreated ear infections, was severely matted, and needed 13 teeth extracted. My husband and I are in our 70s and desperately wanted a dog but feared adopting one with high energy needs. Holly was perfect for us and we determined to give her her best life for however long she lived. She turned 15 on July 5th and we couldn’t have asked for a better dog to share life with. She is…

  • Charlie now Leo

    Charlie now Leo

Throughout my life, I have known so many cats. But I have never met a cat like Leo. He is the goofiest most entertaining cat- he has everyone in the house giggling throughout the day. Leo has decided my oldest daughter is his person. He’s loving towards all of us, but he will follow my oldest daughter around the house and she enjoys every moment of it. Leo lays with his legs sprawled out awkwardly on the floor. He sits like a human sometimes. He will hang off a furniture and make it look comfortable- when we all know it’s…

  • Gumball

    Gumball

Gumball is a great cat and a perfect fit for our household. We are crazy about him! Our house is his jungle gym, he prowls all over the beams and climbs the ladders and makes daring leaps from place to place — a veritable acrobat. He has our dogs eating out of his hand. He's a great mouser. He loves his people and loves attention, as you can see from his big smile when he gets a head rub. He just amuses us to no end. I'm so glad I checked your website the first day he was on it!

    Rascal now Magnus

We adopted Rascal (now Magnus) a week ago. He is such a great cat! Just settled in like he has been here forever as far as being a big lovebug. He and our other cat, Reyka, are still figuring things out. But he is super with our dogs. I know kittens are so cute and adorable, but we like taking adult cats. He is 6 and a bit “full figured”, so maybe some may have passed him by. Their loss is our gain. We are working on a slimming down program and he already lost a tiny bit from getting…

  • Laney now Clover

    Laney now Clover

Clover was adopted in August 2023 after we moved to Maine and has since become the biggest source of joy in our home. She’s the perfect blend of affectionate and playful and silly. She loves to watch the birds, lay in a sun patch and hide behind corners to scare us. Her greatest love is playing under the Christmas tree and knocking off all the ornaments though. She’s the most vocal cat and nothing makes us happier than her greeting us when we get home. We had a great experience adopting from AWS and can’t image life without Clover.

    Tabby now Tappan Zee

Yes, she is named after the bridge over the Hudson River. Apparently she originally came from upstate New York and spend a fair bit of time in the animal shelter system. It took about a year, a year and a half, for her to warm up to us. Even though she tries to hide it, she loves us. She’s a pretty great cat (but don’t tell her I said that).

  • Dopey now Oscar

    Dopey now Oscar

Hi, after we had to put our cats (siblings) to sleep for different health reasons six weeks apart which was completely devastating and finding we had a hole in our hearts, we decided to adopt. Dopey was in the Library in Kennebunk. He was shy and skittish. However, we felt we might be able to give him what he needed: a loving home. After a few rough days (he hid most of the time and wasn’t eating!). He is now living the good life. People food (tuna, sardines, salmon) have put weight on him and he has gained 5 pounds.…

Thank you AWS for a great adoption experience, and I want to leave a dozen pictures for you all to see, but I have chosen one I took just yesterday, because he is just so darn CUTE!!!

  • Narissa

    Narissa

I have always had a unique name— one that was never on keychains or in story books as a child, which I’ve slowly come to terms with during my time. So when I received the text: “Unrelated, we have a cat at work named Narissa”, my interest peaked in ways it never had before, and my initial plan to adopt a dog went out the window when I saw her picture. The first time I met her, I sobbed. She was an instant lovebug, hesitant, but happy. And when I saw that her birthday was the same day as my recently…

    Angus now Maverick

We got Angus, now Maverick from AWS! When we got him he was a wild, anxious 10 month old. We quickly adapted to his energy levels and implemented some one-on-one training to reduce his anxiety. He now thrives, trail runs with me, has some pup best friends, and rules the house! I couldn’t imagine not finding him that day. ❤️

  • Toes

    Toes

We adopted Toes two months ago. She was very shy and hesitant for a while, but we respected her boundaries and gave her space. Over the past few weeks, she has blossomed into a sweet snuggle bug. She had a heart murmur, but upon our most recent vet evaluation it was not detected. It was likely due to stress. She has found her peaceful forever home and is loving life. Thank you!

When I first entered the shelter to adopt a cockatiel I could hear her squacking really loud and constant! She has got such personality and is quite comical. Best decision ever!!!

    Six now Mazzy Star

My husband and I are true animal lovers and have always talked about getting a dog when our living arrangements allowed. As soon as we moved from an apartment to a rented home that allowed and welcomed dogs, we knew that it was the perfect time to welcome another fur baby into our lives. After a lot of research, vetting and wandering the internet, a cute 72-pound pitbull-boxer mix named “Six” immediately caught our eye on the AWS website. After looking at her for over a week (and constantly refreshing the web page to make sure she was still available)…
