Where to Train Your Dog in Southern Maine

There’s lots of things to consider when searching for a place to train your dog: methods, preferences (both yours and your pups), schedule, cost, location and so much more. However, training is tremendously beneficial for dogs and their families. No matter if your pup is new to your household or if you’ve been companions for years, training is one of the best things you can do to build confidence and bond with your dog! Plus, it can reinforce good behaviors and help mitigate poor ones, keeping you and your canine companion living happily together. AWS’ Canine Training program offers a variety of options for training, from group classes to one-on-one training, from pack walks to specialty workshops. And it’s all offered conveniently on Animal Welfare Society’s campus in Southern Maine.

What to Look for in a Dog Trainer

Finding the right training program for you and your dog comes down to who is teaching it! At AWS, our experienced and certified trainers are here to help you and your pup. Each one of our trainers has years of experience and expertise, and they share their enthusiasm and knowledge in each class and program they offer. Whether you are just beginning your training journey, or are ready to dive into more intermediate skills, we have a class for you! Most importantly, we welcome pups of all ages, breeds and abilities to participate in our Canine Training program!

Another important component of dog training is method. Animal Welfare Society is a “Fear-Free Shelter,” meaning our Adoption Center staff is trained to operate in an environment that reduces stress, anxiety and fear in pets. We utilize this approach in our training classes as well! Our trainers use science-based, positive reinforcement techniques to ensure every class is pleasant and enjoyable for all dogs (and people) enrolled so that there is no fear, stress or anxiety in the participating pets.

A Variety of Exciting Classes

At AWS Canine Training, our program of classes is always fresh and fun! Start off your journey with Puppy Kindergarten or Basic Training and then continue the adventure with our fun intermediate classes. From Agility and Obstacles to Scent Work, from Rally or Tricks to Canine Good Citizen Prep, there are so many ways our certified trainers help you and your dog stay engaged and have fun! Keep an eye on our website for our special one-time Pop-Up classes of varying topics.  When we say there is something for everyone, we definitely mean it!

One-on-One Training

If you’re looking for a more personalized training experience, we’re here for you! We offer individualized private consultations, just for you and your dog. During your one-on-one session, one of our trainers can help you work on behavior concerns, obedience questions or to learn new skills! AWS trainers can help with mild behavioral needs such as aggression, anxiety, fearfulness or excessive barking. They can also help with “fun” stuff, like tricks training or working on leash manners and recall. Our one-on-one training program is very flexible regarding topic, duration and schedule. It can be a one-time lesson or ongoing lessons, depending on your concerns and your dog’s needs! The best part about one-on-one sessions? Is we can work with you to schedule what time and date works best!

Scheduling

Join Duke on a Pack Walk as he had a ton of fun!

We understand that time is limited in today’s busy world. Our classes are conveniently scheduled, with day, afternoon and evening classes, every day of the week. Our trainers communicate regularly throughout your multi-week class (or before and after your private consultation) to make sure you have the resources you and your pup need to succeed and have fun doing it. And we promise, we don’t give out too much homework! Most classes are either 4 weeks or 6 weeks, depending on the materials, class goals and graduation requirements (that’s right – did we mention that each pup graduates, talk about pomp and circumstance!)
