Groovy Pet of the Week: White Rabbits

Hey everybody! I’m Fluff, one of four resident white rabbits at AWS. While everyone is preparing for Woofstock, I’ve been hopping around thinking about why white rabbits like me make great pets! Why are we so groovy, I asked myself. And I came up with some great answers! So, AWS made me the pet of the week spokesperson, I mean, spokes-rabbit!

White Rabbits Are Full of Fun

Like many of the dogs and cats at AWS, rabbits like to play! We enjoy running through our spaces and playing with toys. I personally am a big fan of my tunnels, as you can see, I like to spend a lot of time in mine! When you have a white rabbit, like us, you don’t blend into the shadows of our tunnels so you can always find us. Suffice it to say, we’re not great at hide and seek (except maybe in the snow….)

We rabbits love to bounce around, batting at our toys and sniffing out new places to explore. Most rabbits like me also enjoy time spent outside our enclosure, and even getting outside can be a lot of fun for us – but more on that later!

We Are Soft and Affectionate

Rabbits are generally social creatures, so we like to bond with our people – and white rabbits are no exception! I know that I enjoy meeting new people and often will hop right over to say hello. In fact, maybe you’ve seen me on TV (I was featured in a NewsCenterMaine broadcast a while back)!  After a bunny says hello, we’re often ready for some affection. Most of us are friendly, after all. And we don’t have to pull any legs to get our human friends to show affection. We are sooooo soft, it’s hard to resist! Because we are so soft to the touch, most rabbits love to be pet (though do, as with all animals, watch our body language if we’re not in the mood for petting). Now, there is no scientific research that white rabbits are softer than other rabbits, but I think it’s true. My name is Fluff after all!! What do you think?

White Rabbits Are Special

Rabbits come in all different colors, of course, but I think white rabbits are the best! You might say I’m partial, since I know I’m a very handsome fluff ball! But I know my friends Snowball, Clover and Shamrock agree. With our luscious and very soft white fur and classic white bunny tail, we are just as cute as can be! Many white rabbits, like us, have red or pinkish eyes. That is usually a result of a genetic condition called albinism. It’s not a worry as it doesn’t bother us in the least. The only thing is you’ll want to make sure we aren’t exposed to direct, very bright sunlight as our eyes are sensitive. So be sure to give us plenty of shade when we are outdoors!

(And to set the record straight, none of us are related to the famous red-eyed Bunnicula though we do love to munch on vegetables!)

We Are Good Luck Charms

Speaking of famous rabbits, we white rabbits certainly have a role model – the big guy who delivers baskets of eggs in the spring! Everyone loves him and he’s a happy, generous, friendly guy, like we are! In fact, white rabbits are known for positivity, enlightenment and rejuvenation. If you follow a white rabbit, as they say, your dreams will come true! Or, you’ll discover new places and ideas (Wonderland, I’ve heard it’s called). So, I’d say we’re good to have around. I’m pretty sure Clover and Shamrock already know they are good luck but suffice it to say, white rabbits can bring good things to your life.

Will You Hop to the Kids Zone at Woofstock?

So, now that I’ve told you all about why white rabbits are the best, I want to talk a little bit about my friends at Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals (SMHSM), which specializes in lagomorphs like us as well as other small pets. When you adopt a rabbit from AWS, you get a complimentary voucher for a pet wellness exam at SMHSM, which is super cool. And, as you know Woofstock is coming up. Our friends from SMHSM are donating goody bags for the kids zone where kiddos can learn all about how cool rabbits and other small animals are. The colorful goody bags will be filled with stickers, crayons, and rabbit and guinea pig-themed activities. I know my friends at AWS are grateful for the partnership and for having Dr. Ford and SMHSM right in town

Now that you’ve heard me tell you why white rabbits are the best why don’t you come see what makes us so special! Between myself (Fluff), Snowball, or Shamrock & Clover, there’s plenty of awesomeness to go around! If you or someone you know is interested in adopting, come by the Adoption Center or call (207) 985-3244!
