Frequently Asked Questions

AWS Community Veterinary Clinic is a full-service practice, serving pets in AWS’ care and pets belonging to community members. Please review these common questions for more information on us.

We serve pets in care at AWS (shelter pets) and pets belonging to members of our community. Just like a private practice veterinary clinic, we take appointments from members of the public, for wellness exams, vaccinations, surgeries and more. We are now accepting new patients so please give us a call make an appointment.

If you would like to become an established client, please book a wellness appointment. Our doctors will be able to meet you and your pet and establish a relationship for veterinary care. Please fill out our new client information form or give us a call to become a client of our clinic.

Having your pet spayed/neutered at AWS does not officially make you a client. However, we encourage folks who have their pets fixed at our Clinic, and do not have an established vet, to consider becoming a client by scheduling a wellness exam for your pet.
Please note that despite official client status, we offer vaccine boosters for pets who received their initial shot during their spay/neuter surgery with us.

Please call the clinic 2-3 days prior to your pet’s medication running out. When the prescription is ready for pick up, we will reach out We are closed weekends. If you request a prescription during weekend hours, please be aware that we will fill your pet’s prescription the following business day.

We do not offer general grooming services. We do provide nail trims and medically necessary grooming for animals receiving other services from us.

We are not an urgent care or emergency care clinic. We recommend calling the local emergency animal clinic in the area. These specialized clinics have the ability to take on emergency cases and address your pet’s urgent needs. Please do not leave voicemail with us if you pet is facing an emergency situation. Please see the list of emergency animal hospitals in our area.

We are open Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. If you call and we cannot get to the phone, please leave a voicemail with specific information pertaining to your needs. We will return your call within 1-2 business days. We ask that you please don’t call and keep leaving messages, as it can slow down our response time.

High-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) is the cornerstone of veterinary clinics like ours, where the focus is on shelter medicine and community care. HQHVSN is designed to meet or exceed veterinary care standards and make it easier and more affordable for people to get their pets altered. With this model, one veterinarian and support staff spay or neuter 30-40 pets in one day. All of AWS’ veterinarians are skilled in HQHVSN and approach all spay/neuter surgeries, whether on shelter pets or those belonging to community members, with the efficiencies and quality of HQHVSN. Our veterinarians perform spay/neuter surgeries Monday – Friday. Clients drop their pets off in the morning and pick them up the same afternoon. To learn more or to schedule your pet’s surgery visit our spay/neuter page.

While we do serve our shelter population of rabbits and small animals, we only see public rabbits and small animals on occasion. We encourage those seeking care to check out the small animal clinic in Kennebunk. The Southern Maine Hospital for Small Mammals dedicates its practice to the care of companion mammals like rabbits, rodents, ferrets, chinchillas and hedgehogs. To learn more, call them at (207) 535-9330.
