Animal Advocates

During these part-day camp sessions, usually held during school breaks, Animal Advocates, spend time at AWS learning how to care for and advocate for our companion animal friends.

Home | Youth Programs | Day Camps | Animal Advocates

On select days off from school, Junior and Senior Animal Advocates students spend three hours at AWS in a structured educational program, seeing first-hand what goes into caring for animals. Led by AWS’ Youth Programs coordinator, Animal Advocates spend time with animals, participate in activities to support their care, and learn how to understand animals and advocate for them. And most of all, they have fun!

AWS’ animal population and organizational needs change on a regular basis, which means each session of Animal Advocates is unique! Activities vary and could take place in the Adoption Center, the Youth Programs classroom, or even outside on our grounds. Common activities could include preparing enrichment activities for dogs, doing crafts, cleaning or organizing cat toys, or laying out clean bedding for rabbits and small animals. No matter what activities the students work on, they are learning about animals and their needs and wants.

Senior Animal Advocate sessions count towards student community service hour requirements. However, because sessions are limited and fill-up quickly, students seeking community service hours are encouraged to become a regular volunteer or check out our At-Home Project Guide for other ways to help, right from home!

Parakeets are one of the most popular pet bird species in the world, and for good reason! We have so many fun facts on why these beautiful budgies are the perfect companion animal. Follow along tomorrow to learn one more amazing fact, and why you should adopt a parakeet!

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁.
Beyond the ability to learn human words and phrases, parakeets have shown their intelligence in many different ways. Unlike other pet birds, such as canaries and finches, parakeets can learn to come when they’re called, navigate tunnels and mazes, maneuver balls and toys to solve puzzles, and even skateboard! They key to teaching these tricks, however, is to bond with your bird. Parakeets are indeed smart, but they learn much faster when they share a connection of love and trust with their human companions!

Although parakeets only have three basic color combinations— green and yellow, blue and white, or a mixture of these two— the variety of patterns within these combinations are beautiful. Parakeets can be one solid color, or a mixture of them all. White can dominate and make a bird look like fresh snow, or sometimes the colors mix and fade out like tie-dye. A parakeet’s color can even look pastel! Whatever color combination your bird is, though, they’re bound to be beautiful!

Did you know that parakeets can talk? Being a part of the parrot family, parakeets actually have the ability to mimic many different words and phrases. In fact, the parakeet has the largest documented vocabulary of any parrot species! Regardless of if your parakeet actually learns to speak English, however, they can still communicate in many ways. You’ll soon learn that parakeets love to sing, whistle, chirp, squawk and squeak, and can let you know how they’re feeling with ease!

We were very tempted to post all the lyrics to 'Keep on Loving You,' but six-month-old Oreo Speedwagon here convinced us that this super cute photo of him is more than enough to convince you to adopt! Plus, it goes without saying that if you take him home, he's obviously going to keep on loving on you forever!

What's your favorite Oreo (whoops, we mean REO) Speedwagon song?! Let us know in the comments, or stop by our Adoption Center soon to share and meet Oreo!
