Animal Advocates

During these part-day camp sessions, usually held during school breaks, Animal Advocates, spend time at AWS learning how to care for and advocate for our companion animal friends.

Home | Youth Programs | Day Camps | Animal Advocates

On select days off from school, Junior and Senior Animal Advocates students spend three hours at AWS in a structured educational program, seeing first-hand what goes into caring for animals. Led by AWSโ€™ Youth Programs coordinator, Animal Advocates spend time with animals, participate in activities to support their care, and learn how to understand animals and advocate for them. And most of all, they have fun!

AWSโ€™ animal population and organizational needs change on a regular basis, which means each session of Animal Advocates is unique! Activities vary and could take place in the Adoption Center, the Youth Programs classroom, or even outside on our grounds. Common activities could include preparing enrichment activities for dogs, doing crafts, cleaning or organizing cat toys, or laying out clean bedding for rabbits and small animals. No matter what activities the students work on, they are learning about animals and their needs and wants.

Senior Animal Advocate sessions count towards student community service hour requirements. However, because sessions are limited and fill-up quickly, students seeking community service hours are encouraged to become a regular volunteer or check out ourย At-Home Project Guideย for other ways to help, right from home!

Although they can be somewhat timid and cautious, when a rabbit is feeling confident they tend to go exploring! Rabbits love to look down tunnels, dig under blankets, pull up rugs, and fit into smaller spaces. All in the name of curiosity! Rabbits are also crepuscular, which means they're most active at dawn and dusk. So, if you have a sleepy rabbit during the day, that just means they'll need more time to explore their home during the early morning or evening!

Cauliflower, one of our newest residents who is ready to find his happy home, is one curious guy! He loves to rearrange his living space and he never shies away from an adventure. He will fill your home with so much love and lughter!

We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than by sharing a Happy Homes story for you! We feel honored to play a part in matching pets to their perfect people.

"I just wanted to reach out with an update on Fitz! He has had an AMAZING two weeks in his new home meeting his new family and (after a very long and slow introduction process) playing with his brother!

Fitz is an amazing kitten! He is super sweet, playful, cuddly, and vocal! We knew the second he came home and started excitedly exploring his space that he was the right fit for our family! He and his brother Poe are now inseparable. He is growing so fast, playing so much, and we now know heโ€™s very healthy!

Thank you SO very much for matching me with this perfect boy! I came in to adopt him a couple months after the loss of my former kitty that was also given to me from your shelter 16 years ago. I truly believe he sent Fitz my way!"

Continue the love by sharing your own Happy Homes story so we can see how much you love your pet!
