Before Fancee ever made her way from Tennessee to AWS, she survived being hit by a car, leaving both of her hips injured. Now, at just 1 year and 5 months old, she has undergone the surgery needed to help her remaining hip heal and move more comfortably.
Fancee’s second femoral head ostectomy, or FHO, was performed by Dr. Mark House of Small Animal Surgical Services, a board-certified veterinary surgeon who specializes in procedures including orthopedic surgery.
Before surgery, Fancee was carefully prepped: the area around her hip was shaved and cleaned, and she was positioned safely on the surgical table.
During an FHO, the surgeon carefully works through the tissue surrounding the hip joint and removes the head and neck of the femur—the part of the thigh bone that normally fits into the hip socket.
Removing that damaged portion eliminates painful bone-on-bone contact and allows the surrounding muscles and tissues to eventually form a functional “false joint.”
Once surgery was complete, Fancee was stitched up and moved into recovery. Now the focus shifts to rest, gradual activity and rebuilding strength in her leg.
