Additional reading from September 2025: Part Fluff, All Personality: 5 Reasons to Love Chinchillas

Part fluff, part chaos, entirely adorable. Chinchillas are some of the most entertaining little creatures around. They can leap several feet into the air, take baths in dusts, and have the softest fur. But don’t let those adorable faces fool you. These pint-sized athletes have big personalities, some quirky habits and some specific needs.)
They can live to be 10-15 years, sometimes even longer, so these fluffballs are a big commitment. Though they are relatively low-maintenance in some ways, they have some specific care needs, including a high-fiber diet made up primarily of hay. Chinchillas are native to the high Andes mountains of South America, where they’ve mastered the art of running and jumping and navigating rocky terrain. Don’t underestimate those tiny legs! They are very fast and athletic animals.
Fur for days
Due to the cold temperatures of the Andes, chinchillas have incredibly dense and soft fur. Their thick, dense fur isn’t just ridiculously soft; it helps keep them warm in their chilly mountain habitat. But that fluffy coat doesn’t make them hypoallergenic, so those with allergies should keep that in mind.

Since chinchilla fur is so dense, they take dust baths to clean themselves. Yes, you read that right. Dust, not water! These dust baths help to remove dirt and debris, maintaining a healthy coat. Just wait until you feel how soft their fur is! If they’ll let you, that is.
Chinchillas are Extroverts
Chinchillas are very social and agile creatures. They love to run, climb and jump through their spaces for fun. These tiny acrobats have some serious hops and need plenty of space to show off their moves.
While they aren’t very affectionate or cuddly creatures, they don’t mind being pet by people they are familiar with. Think less cuddle buddy, more entertaining roommate. With time and patience, they can build strong bonds with their favorite humans.
Generally, chinchillas are used to living in herds, so it is best to keep at least two compatible chinchillas together at a time – even the fluffiest little social butterfly needs a friend.
FURthermore,
For chinchillas, the real fun happens at night, around dawn and dusk. These little night owls (well, technically crepuscular creatures) tend to rest during the day and become more active in the evening and early morning. This works great for someone who is out of the house during the day.
Chinchillas like to have a hideout space in their enclosure so they can relax and sleep throughout the day. If you want to sleep well at night, it may be best to keep their enclosure away from your bed. After all, their idea of a late-night party involves jumping, climbing and rearranging the furniture.
