What To Do If Your Pet Is Lost

If your pet has gone missing, it can be a stressful and challenging time for anyone. As a community resource, AWS provides a safe place to bring stray, lost and found pets. If your pet is missing, we are here to help. Along with keeping a detailed log of missing and found pets, we work with local are municipalities to act as an impound facility for pets lost and found in their jurisdictions.

Lost Pet Resources

If your pet is missing, you can fill out our Lost Pet Report here. Once you submit the form, we will receive the information right away and we will add your pet’s details to our log of missing animals. Should your pet come into our care, we will contact you using the phone number you provide. We also encourage you to utilize these resources to cast as wide a net as possible:

  • Contact your local Animal Control Officer (ACO).
  • Use social media.
  • Make flyers for your neighborhood.
  • If your pet is microchipped, call the company to report it lost.
  • Read more suggestions at our Lost Pet Resources page below.

Claiming Your Pet

If your pet has come into our care, then we will contact you right away. We are happy to be able to care for your pet while it was missing and love happy reunions. While we do not charge a fee to claim your pet, we are always happy to accept donations. Some towns we contract with for animal control services charge impound fees, which we may collect at time of claim and send to your town. These can also be paid at your city/town hall prior to picking up your pet at AWS.

Found a Pet?

If you have found an animal that you believe is lost or a stray, please contact us at (207) 985-3244. We also encourage you to contact your local Animal Control Officer. ACOs are always on the lookout for missing pets, so it’s important to contact them if you’ve lost or found a pet. Once dropped off at AWS, ACOs provide our staff with information about where the missing animal was found and assist with reunification.
