The Three Types of Dog Walks
Learning how to walk on and off leash can be very challenging for our dogs and frustrating for both parties! Walks are one of the enjoyable ways to share and grow the bond with your canine companion, but sometimes they can be tricky. Though, with some planning and clear expectations, walking can be great for everyone involved! Here’s the three types of ways to walk your dog to make it more enjoyable.
A Walk for the Dog
The first type of dog walk is for your dog! Allow them to explore, go to the bathroom and play. Use a long leash and keep pace with your dog so that the leash stays as loose as possible. Letting your dog use their nose to explore is not only enriching, but important to their mental wellness! A large part of your fuzzy friend’s world view is through their nose.

A Walk for Us

This is the most common dog walk you’ll be doing together. This time you’ll set the pace, but still allow your dog to look around and sniff. Still allowing your dog to maintain a loose leash walk, but following your directions when given. There should be no pulling or zigzagging. This will require some training your dog to stay by your side and checking in with you periodically when asked. You can teach them that this type of walk is happening by using the cue “let’s go!”
A Walk for Me
Or more specifically, heeling. While this type of walk isn’t meant to be the main way you walk your dog, it can be helpful for navigating busy areas or more challenging environments. In this style of walking, your dog typically stays on one side of you, wither their shoulders roughly aligned with your leg and their attention on you. The goal is for them to stay engaged and respond to your cues. It’s a great mental workout! You can use a cue like “heel!” to let them know it’s time to move into focus mode.
