Why Big Dogs Are the Best
While dogs come in all shapes and sizes, today, we wanted to share what makes larger-than-average dogs so wonderful! So, for this week’s Pet of the Week we decided we wouldn’t highlight just one –– but all 6 of the incredible BIG dogs here at AWS. What do we consider a big dog? While it can depend on breed standards, the most common veterinary definition of a large dog is one over 50 lbs, which is what we use, and what you’ll find on this list.
Big Dog = Big Heart
While their size may be large, traditionally big dogs were primarily bred to be loyal, loving and gentle. Some were even originally bred to specifically help humans (like Saint Bernard and Newfoundland) and can make fantastic companions for many families. Large breed dogs have large amounts of affection for their people! Like Peaches – she has so much love to share!

They’re Adventurous

Dogs of all sizes can be fun and adventurous, but big dogs don’t mind getting out there and getting dirty! They can be gentle with humans but tend to tolerate rougher play and are built to be strong swimmers and runners. Many big dogs have coats that can withstand the elements and terrain, making for a great companion for someone with an adventurous spirit! Our friend Bruno is an active dog who can’t wait to find his new hiking partner!
A Big Dog Makes a Great Watchdog
With their extra height and natural need to please, bigger breeds make excellent watchdogs. Always ready to keep an eye on things, a big dog will be the first to let you know of any activity going on around the home and yard. They’ll be sure to tell you when that package you ordered is arriving! We know Cleo will be on the lookout in her new home!

There’s More to Love

We know a big dog equals a big heart, but because of their size there’s also more of them to love! They take up a lot of the couch or the bed, but these snuggly big dogs make for a great weighted blanket when it’s cuddle time. Who doesn’t want a big hug and snuggle session with a big bundle of love? Our pal Link can’t wait to find his snuggle partner to share all 61 lbs. of his love with!
